What is XMPP?
XMPP stands for "Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol". It was previously known as "Jabber". An XMPP server allows you to send and receive messages over the internet, similar to popular instant messengers like WhatsApp or ICQ. However, XMPP offers some advantages that make it even better and more flexible.
The protocol also shows the status of the chat partner, so you can see if someone is currently online or offline. You can even use XMPP for video and voice calls. Additionally, you can extend and customize it for other applications, depending on your own needs and requirements.
Basically, XMPP allows you to communicate with other people over the internet, no matter where they are. It is a reliable and secure way to exchange messages and stay in touch.
How does XMPP work?
XMPP or Jabber servers are organized differently from conventional messenger apps. This means that the protocol is open source and can be used and expanded by anyone. This means that you can create an XMPP account with different providers all over the world.
The accounts look similar to email addresses. They consist of your username, an @ symbol, and the name of the XMPP server. An example of such an account would be "email@example.com".
The special thing about XMPP is that users are not dependent on a single server to send messages. Instead, you can communicate with people on different servers as if they were on the same server as you. XMPP thus enables open and flexible communication without restrictions.
What are the advantages of XMPP?
One major advantage of XMPP is that most providers offer free accounts. However, as a German XMPP server provider, we appreciate financial support.
Privacy is a top priority for most Jabber server providers. Personal information often does not need to be disclosed to minimize the risk of data misuse and surveillance. This also applies to our XMPP server in Germany, where privacy is highly valued.
Another advantage is the free choice of XMPP clients, i.e. the software you use to communicate with others. There are suitable solutions for various operating systems such as Linux, Windows, Mac, iOS, or Android. This makes our German XMPP server platform-independent.
Another plus point is that XMPP is decentralized and belongs to no one. This means that no single provider has control over all data of all users. Instead, various servers can communicate with each other, increasing the freedom and flexibility of communication.
How can I create an XMPP account?
To create an XMPP account, most providers offer a special registration form. On our website, you can find such a form at the top to create an XMPP account on our server.
For registration on our server, you do not need to provide personal data. Once you have filled out the form, a new XMPP account will be created for you and you can immediately start sending messages.
How can I invite friends to wiuwiu.de?
Invitations can be created via any XMPP client that supports ad-hoc commands or the invitation function. In Conversations, the invitation option is located in the burger menu at the top right.
Can I bring my own domain? (XMPP hosting)
We offer you the option of bringing your own domain and operating the XMPP service via our server in Germany. As an administrator, you have full control over your domain and can use all related settings and commands.
The great thing about this is that you can also easily create XMPP accounts for your family and friends. If you are interested, simply visit our website xmpp-hosting.com or send us an email.
Access via Tor Hidden Service
For all Tor fans, a hidden service is also offered, which allows client-to-server connections to be established with the XMPP server. The address is: qawb5xl3mxiixobjsw2d45dffngyyacp4yd3wjpmhdrazwvt4ytxvayd.onion
When setting up the XMPP client, it must be noted that the XMPP client establishes its connection via Tor and that the connection is made to the host qawb5xl3mxiixobjsw2d45dffngyyacp4yd3wjpmhdrazwvt4ytxvayd.onion, while the "wiuwiu.de" in the XMPP ID (example: firstname.lastname@example.org) remains the same.
Which XMPP clients are recommended?
How can I support the server?
Operating an XMPP server costs money. Therefore, we are always grateful for financial support through donations. Donations can be made either through PayPal or bank transfer. Every donation helps us to maintain the operation of the server and improve the quality of our service. (see support).

At wiuwiu.de it's about privacy & data protection, so am I completely anonymous when using wiuwiu.de services?
No, please do not confuse privacy with anonymity. The services are privacy-friendly and designed to minimize data collection.
I forgot my password. What can I do?
If you want to change your password for your XMPP account, you can do this in your XMPP client, if supported by your client and if you still have access to your account. Please note that specific account information is required for this, which we do not have access to for privacy reasons. This means that we unfortunately cannot help you with forgotten passwords.
To avoid this problem, we recommend using a password manager. With a password manager, you can securely manage your passwords and have them readily available at all times without having to memorize them.
What can I do if I am in a network that only allows web traffic?
If you are in a network that only allows web traffic (ports 80, 443), your XMPP client should automatically connect to the XMPP server via the allowed ports. Alternatively, you can also configure it manually (HTTP-Bind / BOSH). The address is: https://wiuwiu.de/http-bind
